Medical Education in Mauritius

The University of Mauritius (UoM) is the national University of Mauritius. It is the most seasoned and biggest university in the nation as far as students enlistment and educational programs are offered. The public university’s main campus is situated at Réduit, Moka.

The University of Mauritius was officially established by the University of Mauritius Ordinance in December 1965, consolidating the current School of Agriculture.   • Doctor of Medicine (MD) – Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Medicine

    Programme Duration: Normal: 6 years (Bachelor of Medicine: 3 years; Master of Medicine: 3 years) Maximum: 9 years (Bachelor of Medicine: 4 years maximum; Master of Medicine: 5 years maximum)The Bachelor of Medicine (3 years full-time) is the first part of the undergraduate medical programme. It is organized in compulsory semester block modules composed of different units and 4 optional modules (one per semester as from Year 2) to be chosen from a list made available to students. The Master of Medicine (3 years full-time) is the second part of the undergraduate medical programme. Only students who have passed in the Bachelor of Medicine part can register in this part of the programme. Master of Public Health (MPH)

    The programme is offered on a full-time basis. The duration of the postgraduate programme should normally not exceed 2 years (4 semesters). The student may exit with a postgraduate diploma if he has not completed the research project.

    Master’s Degree (FT): Normal 2 semesters Maximum 4 semesters

    Postgraduate Diploma (FT): Normal 2 semesters Maximum 4 semesters

To be eligible for selection to the undergraduate medical course, a candidate should have:

  • Completed 17 years of age, and
  • Completed 10+2 years of education or Intermediate of Science or equivalent, with English, Biology, Physics and Chemistry as main subjects and he/she must have passed in all the subjects mentioned above, securing not less than 50% of marks in the subjects mentioned above put together and also obtain an aggregate of 50% overall.


  • Completed B.Sc. degree recognized by the university with one of the following subjects viz. Physics, Chemistry, Biology and at least one other prescribed science subject of study up to the ancillary level and he/she should have scored not less than an aggregate of 50% marks; provided that such candidate shall have passed the earlier qualifying examination (10+2 or an equivalent examination) with the subjects Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English.


A candidate admitted to the course in the University Medical School or any of the affiliated medical colleges shall register with the University by remitting the prescribed fee along with the application form for registration duly filled in and forwarded to the University through the Dean of the School or the Principal of the affiliated college within the stipulated date.



The selection of the candidates is by:

  • Kathmandu University Medical Test (KUMET) for Nepali Citizens followed by the interview at NMC under self-financing scheme.
  • Interview for international candidates by NMC under self-financing scheme.

Can I enroll for a part time course in universities abroad ?

International students are not allowed to enroll for part-time courses.

Are students allowed to work during their studies abroad?

In most of the countries, students can work up to 20 hours a week during their academic term & 40 hours a week during their holidays. Countries like Singapore, does not allow part-time work to international students

Can I stay back after completing my studies?

After completion of the course, students are advised to return back to their home country. If you have been offered a full time job & have a valid visa to stay in the country you may do so.

For how long can I stay in the country on a student visa.

A student visa is normally valid for the duration of the course. You may get a grace period of 3-4 weeks to make arrangements for your return to home country.

What if I do not complete the course on time?

You need to get permission from your academic department to re-sit for the exams and also seek the help from the international office to get the visa extended for the required period of time.
